Essential Oil Consults + Education

Certified Pure, Therapeutic Grade essential oils combine the concentrated benefits of plant-medicine with the most advanced scientific research and testing for purity, potency and reliability in results. These oils are not only harvested sustainably (often with a negative ecological footprint!) but are beyond fair-trade in the impact and blessings provided to the harvesters, farmers, and distillers who produce them.

Small in molecular size and lipid-friendly, essential oils can easily penetrate the skin and bi-lipid layers of cell membranes. They directly effect the olfactory system (sense of smell) and limbic system of the brain (processing memory, trauma and emotions).

Essential oils and plant medicines have been used for millennia in cultures all around the world and are significantly more simple to use than traditional herbalism remedies. When used correctly, and in proper dosage, dilution and application, they provide safe, effective, simple and affordable options in supporting full-spectrum wellness - mind, body, spirit and home.

There are many “essential oils” on the market these days, however please note — there is NO governing board overseeing or enforcing the quality of essential oils, nor the accuracy of labels!!

It is critically important and your responsibility to know and trust your brand, the purity, the environmental impact of sourcing and the accuracy of plant species and appropriate application.

Essential oils have become my ‘toolbox’ of raw ingredients/materials for many aspects of my personal/home care. These oils are my medicine cabinet, my beauty cabinet, used (heavily diluted!) on my pets, used to clean my home, and even occasionally for a tasty flavorings in baked goods, coffees and cocktails. However, due diligence and extreme care have been put into establishing these habits and uses. Again, only YOU hold the responsibility for the health and safety of yourself, family and pets, but I would be happy to walk with you as you learn.

Introduction

  • Inside many plants—hidden in roots, seeds, flowers, bark—are concentrated, highly potent chemical compounds. These natural compounds are essential oils.

Essential oils give a plant its scent, protect it from hazardous environmental conditions, and even assist it with pollination, among other important functions and benefits.

  • Some essential oils are soothing, toning, and grounding, while others are energizing, warming, and renewing—but all pure essential oils are natural. The variety of essential oils allows you to naturally and effectively address your specific concerns.

With so many essential oils available, you can tailor them to your specific wants and needs rather than be forced to settle for a generic solution. This makes essential oils a popular choice for those looking for the best natural solutions in the modern era. The versatility of essential oils is part of what has made them so popular in recent years. People love that they can use essential oils for a variety of tasks, without having to buy multiple products.

  • While you might think essential oils are a new, hip trend, plant extracts and plant-based products are deeply rooted in the traditions of the past. Essential oils have been used by ancient civilizations across the globe for:

    Aromatherapy
    Personal care
    Healthcare practices
    Religious ceremonies
    Beauty treatments
    Food preparation

We have increasing scientific evidence and research showing that essential oils can be effectively and safely used in a wider range of day-to-day practices and routines for amazing benefits. Today, essential oils can be used for cooking, household cleaning, personal hygiene, and much, much more.*

When you use essential oils, you'll have more natural solutions and fewer toxic, synthetically manufactured products in your life and home.

  • So many of the products we use in our day-to-day lives are filled with synthetic chemicals. These unnatural products can weigh us down and even negatively influence the way we think, feel, and live.

Pure essential oils offer an alternative to synthetic products in simple, convenient, effective and affordable ways. Essential oils are more than just natural products. Each with a unique chemical makeup, essential oils have dozens of benefits, with minimal side effects when used properly. Essential oil benefits are determined by the chemistry of the plants. If these natural chemicals are properly extracted, they can be used to help you in your daily life.

  • The purity of an essential oil is its most important characteristic. When an essential oil is adulterated or contaminated, it becomes less effective and can even be dangerous.

Not all essential oil companies choose to enforce high testing standards for their oils. In fact, many companies skip important steps in the testing process in order to save money or time. Unfortunately, when proper testing measures are not taken, it’s impossible to ensure that an essential oil is truly “pure.”

How can you tell if your essential oils are pure? Before you buy essential oils, do a little research to find out how essential oil companies source, produce, and test their oils.

Here are a few questions to ask during your research
    :

    Plant quality:
Does the company use high-quality plants to produce their essential oils? Are the plants grown in the right conditions with the right farming practices?

    Production practices:
Does the company have safety procedures in place to guard against contamination during the production process? Are oils adulterated or are synthetic fillers added to cut costs?

    Testing methods:
Does the company test each batch of essential oil? Is impartial, third-party testing used? Are test results available to the public?

    Storage and handling:
Are the oils carefully processed, packaged, and stored to avoid chemical alterations caused by exposure to heat or light? (Amber bottles are typically the best option for essential oil storage.)

Applications

You don’t need a degree in chemistry or extensive training to know how to use essential oils effectively. With a basic understanding of safety precautions and application methods, it is easy to start using essential oils.

  • Aromatic use of essential oils is especially powerful.

The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiological, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system, which is the part of your brain that stores memories and emotions. Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming.

Diffusing is one of the simplest ways to use essential oils aromatically. You can use an essential oil diffuser if you’d like but using essential oils aromatically does not require any special diffusing devices. You can achieve the same health benefits by simply placing a few drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand, cupping it around your nose, and breathing deeply.

  • Essential oils easily penetrate the skin for localized benefits, making topical (on the skin) application a great way to experience the benefits of essential oils. This is why doTERRA works to create potent essential oils that are powerful enough to promote healthy-looking skin, yet gentle enough to use on a daily basis.

When used topically, essential oils can improve complexion and skin tone. They can also be used as part of a soothing massage. Before topical application, be sure to follow all label recommendations and dilution instructions.

Beneficial Areas You Can Apply Essential Oils:
    Neck
    Forehead and temples
(unless the oil is classified as a “hot oil”)
    Chest and abdomen
    Arms, legs, bottoms of feet

    Sensitive Areas to be Avoided:
Some facial areas, such as the skin around the eyes
    Eyes and inner ears
Broken, damaged, or otherwise injured skin

  • When ingested, essential oils directly enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain.

Follow label recommendations and other professional guidelines for dosage when using essential oils internally.

    Effective Methods of Internal Application:
Add essential oils to water, smoothies, milk, tea, or other drinks
Put a drop under the tongue
Take in a veggie capsule or add to a small amount of applesauce or yogurt
Use oils in recipes for cooking or baking to replace fresh or dried herbs and spices.

  • Pay attention to any specific warnings on your essential oil packaging and adhere to any recommendations provided by the manufacturer.

  • Avoid putting oils into your nose, inner ears, eyes, broken skin, or other sensitive areas. If irritation occurs, dilute immediately with a carrier oil. NOT water!

  • To minimize skin sensitivity, dilute essential oils using a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil. The suggested dilution ratio is one drop of essential oil to five drops of carrier oil. Always dilute an oil when using it for the first time, applying it to sensitive skin, or when using essential oils with children.

When using oils with a particularly strong chemistry, you will want to dilute one drop of essential oil to ten drops of carrier oil.

  • Know your strong oils. Some essential oils should always be diluted with fractionated coconut oil before putting them on your skin. Some of these oils include Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Oregano, and Thyme. Keep in mind, this is not an exhaustive list, so always pay attention to labels with warnings about strong oils.

  • Some essential oils can pose a risk for sun sensitivity, particularly citrus oils. Some of these oils include Bergamot, Green Mandarin, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Tangerine, Wild Orange, and any essential oil blends that contain these oils. Again, this is not an exhaustive list. Before applying an essential oil topically, check the label for any sun sensitivity warnings. Avoid direct sunlight or UV rays for at least 12 hours following the use of these oils on the skin (this includes tanning beds).

  • Make sure to store essential oils out of reach of children. This measure will help prevent accidental ingestion. You’ll also want to keep your oils away from excessive light or heat, as this can alter the chemical properties of an essential oil significantly.

  • Always supervise essential oil application with your children. Because children have more delicate skin, it’s a good idea to dilute oils before applying them topically. Try applying the oil to the bottom of a child’s feet before you try other areas. In addition to safe storage practices, you can also use Child Resistant Caps to ensure that your children don’t accidentally ingest oils on their own.

  • If you have specific health concerns, consult with your doctor before using essential oils.

Safety First!

Before you use essential oils, know that not all oils are created equal.
Typically, high-quality essential oils go through rounds of rigorous testing to ensure the product is safe to use. Not all companies use thorough testing methods, and many essential oil distributors will use synthetic fillers that alter the efficacy of the oils. Only use essential oils that have been carefully produced and thoroughly tested to ensure safety for you and your family.
